Congratulations to David Shapira, the inaugural Wonder, Care, Act Alumni Award recipient!
From leading one of the largest grocery retailers in the nation to establishing research scholarships at the Community College of Allegheny County to embarking on weekly outdoor adventures with his grandchildren, David Shapira is a true embodiment of our Wonder, Care, Act philosophy.
Shapira is deeply devoted to his community—a striking example of his service is the thoughtful and transparent leadership of the committee to allocate nearly $6 million in donations following the tragic Tree of Life synagogue shooting in 2018. He has also served on the board of numerous Pittsburgh nonprofit and cultural organizations, including United Way of Allegheny County and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
His leadership is grounded in a deep curiosity about how communities and systems can be improved, a lifelong commitment to service, and a willingness to take thoughtful—and often courageous—action
—Katie Blauvelt, daughter-in-law
We look forward to sharing more about Shapira’s life and accomplishments in the next issue of En Avant magazine.
The prestigious Wonder, Care, Act Alumni Award is presented annually to an alum who demonstrates extraordinary curiosity, service, and leadership. Nominees are evaluated on their professional achievement, public service, and support for the Falk Laboratory School mission.
💡 To wonder is to engage with the world around us, identifying opportunities for improvement.
💙 To care is to show concern for our community, whether it’s within the school walls, among family and friends or beyond.
🏃♀️ To act is to put a plan into action.
